October 7th, 2009 by adminThis is the first time that a President will have a “first light” at the White House – the timing is perfectly timed to the Year of Astronomy 2009. And it happens today! See: SkyandTelescope.com They will have about 150 children and astronomers at the white house for this special event. It is a great show of Obama’s commitement to science and support for astronomy – to promote greater awareness of our place in the universe.
This is the brainchild of our friend Audrey Fischer – the same lady who donated the awesome 3.5 lb Nantan Meteorite that “meteor mama” Janet D (hotrockshawaii.com) shows at local events. Audrey is an advocate of astronomical causes and sparked the idea to hold a star party at the White House. Thank you Audrey – Great job! Aloha Dan and Janet D

August 4th, 2009 by adminAugust 15 at the Volcano at the KMC Military post. Kid related fun. Planetarium, button making. Janet will be Meteor Mama with some cool rocks for kids to handle. Some solar scopes set up outside for sun viewing as well. Bar B que.

Star party report July 25 2009
July 30th, 2009 by adminJust a quick report. We had excellent weather this last Sat up at VIS. A very large group of interested people and lots of kids right from the start. Cliff and Toni from Whac as well as a few others from whac. me and Janet from Bigisland astronomy.com and Josh from Hilo astro came by later. We all set up and then entertained the large group of people with the objects of the night sky. Janet helped a bunch of kids learn how to use the Dobs. People looking at the moon before it set. Then it was onto nebula s and globular s. I had my WO 80 mm set up and showed off Omega Centari,M4 ,and all the fun objects in Sagatarius, the triffid,Swan etc. Cliff was showing off his beautifull 24 " dob lots of ohhs and aaaaas as a large line formed behind his scope and Toni,s I finaly got my goto working well and stared doing some imaging. I got some cool shots taken afocaly from Cliffs scope and a few great shots thru mine. June 26th, 2009 by adminIt was pretty windy. Gusts to 25 kts. The visual viewing was good,but astrophotography was impossible. Had janet and the inlaws up and showed them Saturn, The Triffid, The Swan, M4, Omega Centari, and a few other items
